Apple iPod Nano - Music Has a New Face

By iPod Price, March 10, 2010 1:08 am

The new iPod nano from Apple Inc. is a portable media player that resulted in a revolution in the field of music. It is the mid-range model in the iPod family. The first generation model was launched on September 7, 2005 combining the features of both the iPod shuffle and iPod classic. Apple launched this product with an intention of replacing the iPod mini which was discontinued on the same day. The replacement of the mini was a big surprise for the Apple-related websites even though there were rumours about a new flash memory-based iPod, there was no prior notice of the popular mini being discontinued.

The development work on the design of the Apple iPod nano began only nine months before its launch date. The nano uses flash memory, but with a miniaturised version of the display screen and “click wheel” found on the iPod classic. The screen of the nano also shares the same resolution as the classic. The battery and other internal parts are also in reduced size compared to the mini.

The nano works with iTunes on the Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows. It connects to the computer via the same proprietary dock connector as the third-generation iPod, the fourth-generation iPod, and the iPod mini, using USB 2.0 connectivity. The iPod nano comes with a stop watch and a multiple time zone clock function. There also exist combination lock features that make use of the click wheel to lock the iPod, and serves to secure the user’s calendar and contact information. The Apple iPod nano uses general-purpose integrated circuits (IC) instead of smaller, low cost custom developed chips, in order to reduce time-to-market. This design helps in increasing the number of electronic components and increases the cost.

A Review of the Peek - The Little Gadget With Just One Purpose

By iPod Price, March 7, 2010 1:01 am

The Peek is a new pocket-size gizmo that sends and receives email. At first glance the Peek looks just like the Blackberry. I’m sure it was no accident that the makers of the Peek shamelessly copied the Blackberry design. But, while the two look similar, they are very little in common. The Peek has only one purpose, and that is to send and receive email.

The Peek measures 4″ x 2.7″ x 0.4″ and comes in dark gray, aqua or dark red. On the right is a rolling thumbwheel, that scrolls through lists and menus. Below the wheel is a Back/Cancel button and at the top is the power button. And, that’s it. It is truly a device for the technologically challenged who have no use or desire to have a smartphone or other fancy devices.

In fact, the Peek isn’t concerned with appealing to corporate America who already carry the newest tech gadgets. There are no plug-ins, downloads, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or anything else to make it complicated.

There are only 3 basic screens on the Peek. One screen displays the list of messages while another opens individual messages. The third screen is the preferences screen. I think even my husband, who claims the ATM machine is “too complicated,” could figure this out.

The first time you turn on the Peek, you are asked for your email address and password. The Peek will automatically check for new email messages every 5-15 minutes, based on your preferences. You can be notified of new messages with a chime, vibrating buzz, and a blinking blue light in the corner. You can also check for new messages on command. You can store up to three email accounts in the Peek.

The Peek costs around $100, which may seem a little high. But, for the sake of simplicity and ease of use, it may be worth a little extra for those tired of complicated devices.

Overall, this is thumbs-up Peek review. It is a great little gadget for all of us who have no use for the blackberry, iphone or PDA. There are a few software designs that could have been designed better. The Peek has no formatting at all. That means no stationery, no spell check or even bold and italics.

The Peek [http://peekreview.info] truly is a simple, single-function device that makes sense.

Comparing Zune to IPod

By iPod Price, February 23, 2010 11:47 pm

If you were to buy a portable music player, what would you look up? iPod or Zune? Chances are you would automatically think of the iPod. There’s a reason for that - iPods have been getting unbelievable marketing over the last few years and Apple has done a good job of getting people to think iPods are the only portable music player out there. This is not the case. Microsoft’s Zune is a recent addition to the portable player market and is worth taking a look.

Navigation - iPod’s click-wheel is a “love it or hate it” sort of thing. Some love it, some hate it. The newer models feature a split-screen interface, which is nice. Zune offers a touch sensitive pad, making it feel like a laptop pad, to some degree. iPod’s click-wheel navigation isn’t as intuitive as the Zune’s touch pad.

Visual Appeal - Apple knows visual design. Their line of computers and computer accessories is real eye-candy. It’s no exception when it comes to the iPod - its sleek, smooth and modern looking player. Microsoft Zune team needs to work on their visual design.

Compatibility - Microsoft is known for having ‘issues’. The Zune is no exception. No Mac support and incompatibility with Microsoft’s own protected WMA format. The iPod is cross-platform and iTunes score big for the Apple team.

Quality - The Zune offers great sound quality, an FM tuner, Wi-Fi and wireless synchronization. The iPod also has great sound quality and a solid battery.

Price - Apple is known for its pricey products. Compare any laptop to a similar Apple laptop and you’ll see Apple simply charges more. It’s no exception when it comes to the iPod. For what you get with the Zune, the price of the iPod is too much. If the iPod offered FM and Wi-Fi support, it’d be a different call.

It’s great to see the Zune on the market. Competition is good for consumers, so we can expect to see more from both design teams and it should be fun to watch what they dream up.
